Knowing during, not after
Recognizing hazardous situations, unsafe behavior and developing incidents as they unfold — slips and falls, restricted-area access, unsafe practices, crowding — so teams can intervene early rather than review footage after harm is done.
Most camera systems are a record, not a witness
Ask what a site's cameras are actually for, and the honest answer is usually evidence. They run, they record, and somebody opens the footage after a person is already on the floor — to establish what happened, who was responsible, and what the claim is likely to cost. The recording is excellent. It is also entirely retrospective. Every frame of it existed in real time; nobody was looking at that frame.
This is not a failure of diligence. A control room with a wall of feeds cannot be watched, and the arithmetic is unforgiving: attention is singular, and it has to be allocated before you know where the incident will be. Operators end up watching the screens where something has gone wrong before, which is a reasonable heuristic and a poor safety strategy. Incidents do not announce which feed to look at.
They do, however, tend to announce themselves. Harm is rarely instantaneous. A spill sits on the floor for minutes before someone walks through it. A ladder is set at a bad angle before anyone climbs it. A worker steps inside a machine guard before the cycle starts. Crowding at a doorway builds before it becomes a crush. Between the condition and the consequence there is a window — sometimes seconds, often minutes, occasionally hours — and it is almost always real.
Scene understanding is what makes that window usable. Because the platform reads behavior as a sequence rather than a frame, it recognizes the developing state and not just the aftermath, and it can put that state in front of a human while there is still something to do about it. Nothing about the cameras changes. What changes is when you find out.
Written down afterwards, and not all of it
These are the figures that exist. Every one of them is assembled after the event, from what employers reported — and in Great Britain the regulator estimates that around half of the reportable non-fatal injuries never reach it at all.

Hazards as states, not flashes
A spill, an obstruction, a propped fire door, a load left in a walkway: these are recognized as conditions that persist and stay live until they are cleared — not as a single instant that scrolls off a screen.

Posture, pace and stillness
Falls, slips, collapses and struggling movement have distinct temporal signatures. So does the opposite: a person who has stopped moving somewhere that people never stop.
C·03 · RULES OF THE SPACE
What is safe here, right now
Machine guarding, exclusion zones during a lift, protective equipment, occupancy limits, temporary closures — each area carries its own live conditions, and behavior is judged against them.
What it reads
- Falls, slips and collapses — and the stillness that follows them
- Entry into restricted or temporarily hazardous areas: lift zones, live plant, closed sections
- Unsafe practice — working at height without protection, bypassed guarding, blocked egress
- Spills, obstructions and dropped loads as persistent conditions with a clock running
- Crowding and queue build-up at doors, stairs, platforms, lanes and counters
- Lone working in higher-risk areas, and the absence of the usual second person
- Vehicle and pedestrian interaction in yards, docks and service areas
What it flags
- A hazardous condition that has been present and unaddressed for too long
- A person entering an area that has just become dangerous
- Density and flow at an exit trending towards an unsafe state
- Equipment operated outside its safe procedure, or without required protection
- A fall — and, more tellingly, a fall to which nobody has responded
- Someone motionless in a place where stopping is itself the anomaly
- Repeated near-misses at the same corner, doorway or workstation
What early actually buys you
Every safety programme is a race between a developing condition and somebody noticing it. Scene understanding does not remove the hazard — it changes who gets there first.
