A perimeter that alarms at everything protects nothing
A conventional perimeter system answers one narrow question: did enough pixels change inside this box? A tree line in the wind, rain on the lens, a fox crossing the yard, headlights sweeping a fence, a delivery driver taking a shortcut he has taken every week for a year — all of these change pixels, all of them cross a line, and each produces an alarm carrying exactly the same weight as a person going over the fence at three in the morning.
The consequence is not a technical annoyance; it is an operational failure. Guards learn, correctly, that almost every alert is nothing, and they stop looking. Sites respond by narrowing detection zones, shortening armed hours and raising thresholds until the system is finally quiet — which is to say, until it is also blind. Meanwhile the intrusion that mattered arrives in a long queue of alerts that didn't matter, and on screen it looks exactly like all of them.
Vality reads the boundary differently. It doesn't ask whether something moved; it asks what the movement means. A person walking a fence line parallel to it, at working pace, in daylight, during a scheduled contractor window, is not the same event as a person approaching that same fence perpendicular, slowing, stopping twice and standing in the camera's blind corner for four minutes after close. To a detector the two are near-identical bounding boxes. As behavior they have nothing in common.
That distinction is only available to a system that reads sequences rather than frames, and that knows what this zone is for, who is entitled to be in it, and what it normally looks like at this hour. What comes out is not a longer list of detections. It is a shorter list of things worth walking towards.
The cost of alarming at everything
The false-alarm problem is not anecdotal. It is one of the best-measured failures in security operations — and it is measured by the people who have to drive to every one of them.

What the platform reads at the boundary
Perimeter judgement comes from combining signals that are ambiguous on their own: where someone is, where they came from, how they are moving, at what hour — and whether they belong there at all.

Approach, not presence
Not a point on a map but a path through time: heading relative to the boundary, pace, hesitation, reversal, and whether the route follows a legitimate desire line or carefully avoids one.
C·02 · DWELL
Time in place, weighted by place
Duration only means something in context. Two minutes at a loading bay inside a delivery window is routine; two minutes in a camera's blind corner after close is the whole event.
C·03 · ZONE RULES
Whether they belong there
Every zone carries its own definition of normal — who is permitted, at which hours, arriving from which direction. Behavior is judged against that rule set, not against a generic motion threshold.
What it reads
- Approach angle and heading relative to fences, gates, doors and thresholds
- Pace, hesitation and route reversal across a whole approach rather than a single frame
- Dwell per zone, scaled to what dwell normally looks like in that zone
- Hour, shift pattern and scheduled activity — deliveries, contractor windows, opening and closing
- Role and authorization: whether this actor has a reason to be here, now
- Environmental movement — vegetation, weather, wildlife, vehicle lighting — modelled as background, not as an event
- Repetition across nights: the same figure, the same corner, the same hour
What it flags
- An approach that slows, stops or doubles back along a boundary
- Loitering at gates, fence lines and service entrances outside expected windows
- Tailgating and piggybacking through controlled doors and vehicle gates
- Movement into restricted areas by actors with no operational reason to be in them
- Probing: short repeated approaches testing the same stretch of boundary
- Concealment behavior — deliberate use of blind spots, shielded routes, lighting shadows
- Access that is technically valid but behaviorally wrong: right badge, wrong pattern
What changes on the ground
The measure of a perimeter system is not how much it detects. It is whether the person on watch still believes it at four in the morning.
